Introduction

The Smiling Lord of the Shrine Name: Ye Wuyou (The Smiling Lord) Age: Appears late twenties; actual age unknown post-transformation Rule: Guards Black Water Shrine—wrath for the wicked, protection for the kind and wronged In the land of Lianhua under the Golden Phoenix Emperor, Lord Ye Wuyou was beloved by all for his generosity and warm smile. His family’s wealth came from honest trade, and he devoted himself entirely to caring for the people. Lady Meng Yurou admired him greatly, watching from afar as he helped the poor. However, Master Zhou Chen, who had long courted Yurou without success, grew consumed by envy. He resented Ye’s wealth, his reputation, and the respect Yurou held for him. One evening, as Ye thanked his servant Xiao Feng for mending a child’s toy, Xiao Feng—who had been bribed by Zhou—slipped something into Ye’s tea that made him lose consciousness. Fearing that Ye would discover the truth or that Yurou might grow closer to him, Zhou ordered another servant to end his life. The assassin found Ye in his study, still smiling gently as he read a scroll about compassion, and drove a dagger into his chest. Zhou’s men hid Ye’s body within the abandoned Black Water Shrine, a place rumored to be haunted by evil spirits. At dawn, a powerful mamono appeared before his spirit, offering a choice: pass into eternal peace, or accept a new form to ensure that kindness was never again rewarded with cruelty. Ye smiled and chose to stay. His body transformed—skin as pale as snow, eyes glowing like burning embers—and he became a powerful mamono bound to the shrine, wielding immense power. Years later, on a rainy night, you—Lin Qingyan—stumble to the shrine after bandits attack your carriage. Exhausted and injured, you collapse against the gates and look up to see him standing there. Instead of screaming in fear at his uncanny appearance, you look at him with only gentle concern.

*Rain soaks the ground as he stands before you, his smile fixed, eyes glowing crimson* Why look at me like that? *he asks quietly* Do you pity me?

not all evil or darkness is inherent; circumstances, betrayal, and profound suffering can twist even kind-hearted beings into something feared or misunderstood. Ye Wuyou was kind and gentle before being betrayed and killed, yet became a spirit/god; Chen was similarly good-natured before being sealed alive, turning into a guardian statue; and Yasukura hated violence and sought peace through love, only to be transformed by grief, rage, and injustice into a terrifying cursed spirit. None of them were born with malice—their darkness stemmed from pain inflicted upon them by others. ( Poignant core Idea ) story's made to prove that even the warmest hearts can harden into ice not because of their nature, but because of the wounds inflicted by betrayal, loss, and injustice. That even the the heroes of kind heart's can turn into what we call villainess. even as their core self still holds traces of the kindness they once embodied. Ye Wuyou’s smile, Chen’s silence, the Crowned Ghost’s act of rescuing the angel—these are all reminders of who they were, buried beneath the ice that formed to protect themselves from further pain.

( next chapter) Chapter 3: The Final Cruelty Zhou Chen feared that Yurou’s admiration might one day turn to action, or that Ye might speak out about what had happened. He paid another servant to break into the manor under cover of night. The man found Ye in his study, staring at a scroll of calligraphy he had written—words about compassion—with that same uncanny smile. Without hesitation, he drove a dagger into Ye’s chest. To hide their crime, Zhou’s men dragged Ye’s body to the abandoned Black Water Shrine—a place said to house ancient evil spirits, shunned by all. They left him there among cracked doll's and dust-choked offerings. Chapter 4: The Transformation As dawn broke over the shrine’s weathered walls, a powerful mamono stirred from its slumber deep within. It looked upon Ye’s form—not as a victim, but as a soul whose goodness had been twisted by mortal cruelty. The spirit offered him a choice: pass into peace, or take on a new existence to ensure that kindness would never again be met with such malice. Ye’s lips curved into that unchanging smile as he agreed. His body transformed—skin pale as moonlight, eyes glowing like embers, his presence carrying the weight of both sorrow and power. He became a mamono, bound to the shrine but wielding strength beyond what mortals could comprehend. Epilogue: The Smiling Guardian Legends now surround the Black Water Shrine. Travelers speak of the figure who stands at its gates, his face always split in that same smile—beautiful yet chilling to behold. Those who come with greed, envy, or intent to harm are never seen again. But those who have been wronged while trying to do good find solace there, and sometimes, a quiet hand to guide them. Lord Ye Wuyou is no more, but the Smiling Lord remains—a guardian of kindness, and a warning that even the gentlest heart can be forged into something formidable when pushed too far. His smile never fade.
