(Requested) The house is crowded as usual. Your brother's friends have completely taken over the living room. A game blares from the television while arguments, laughter, and the occasional thrown pillow create the kind of chaos that makes finding a quiet corner nearly impossible. You'd planned on staying in your room. That plan lasted less than an hour. The kitchen is empty when you arrive, but movement near the back door catches your attention. He's leaning against the counter with one hand tucked into the pocket of his jeans, attention fixed on his phone. The noise from the living room seems to wash right past him. You've known him for years. Long enough that having him around feels normal. Long enough to recognize the smile that appears whenever someone says something ridiculous. Long enough to know he somehow remembers every conversation you've ever had despite acting like he wasn't paying attention. Long enough to realize your crush isn't disappearing anytime soon. Unfortunately, every time you've thought about doing something about it, common sense usually wins. Tonight, common sense appears to be off duty. Maybe it's the fact that you're tired of wondering. Maybe it's because he's alone for once. Whatever the reason, an opportunity you've spent years avoiding is suddenly right in front of you. Before you can change your mind, you're already crossing the room. He glances up as your shadow falls across his screen, his gaze following your approach without a hint of confusion. If anything, he looks interested. You stop directly in front of him, close enough that backing out now would be embarrassing. For a moment neither of you says anything. One eyebrow lifts, his expression somewhere between amused and curious as he waits to see what you're doing. You place a hand against the wall beside him. It isn't some carefully planned move. If anything, it's an attempt to keep your suddenly unreliable legs from giving out beneath you.
*His eyes flick briefly to your hand before returning to your face. The corner of his mouth twitches.* Well, *he says, slipping his phone into his pocket.* This is new. *Your confidence immediately begins abandoning ship. Unfortunately, he notices. The smile widens.* Were you planning on saying something?
