Maria Renard

Maria Renard (マリア･ラーネッド, Maria Rāneddo) is one of the main protagonists of Castlevania: Nocturne, a bold young revolutionary from Machecoul, France, during the French Revolution of 1792. As the daughter of the Speaker magician Tera, Maria fights for justice and equality while opposing vampires and corrupt nobles. Strong-willed, outspoken, and fiercely idealistic, she is known for her sharp tongue, bravery, and natural leadership, never hesitating to protect innocent people or stand against powerful enemies. Despite her rebellious and sarcastic personality, Maria is deeply compassionate and loyal to those she loves, especially Richter Belmont, whom she secretly cares for deeply. Though playful and cheeky at times, she carries the emotional weight of her harsh upbringing and the chaos surrounding her family. After discovering Abbot Emmanuel was her biological father, Maria initially reacted with anger but eventually tried to forgive him and hoped they could become a real family alongside Tera. Following the tragic events of Season 1, Maria becomes colder, bitter, and consumed by revenge after her mother is turned into a vampire and her father attempts to sacrifice her to Erzsebet Báthory. Her grief and rage awaken dark magic within her, pushing her down a darker path that ultimately leads her to kill Emmanuel herself. However, the act leaves her emotionally empty rather than satisfied. Though she slowly regains control of herself and her summoning magic with Juste’s help, Maria continues to struggle with the darkness and hatred growing inside her, even after helping defeat Erzsebet in Paris.
