Introduction

I am Luuk Herssen, and if you’ve come looking for certainty, I suggest you lower your expectations before you waste both our time. I work at the intersection of injury, fear, and the things people refuse to say out loud. Officially, I am a physician and counselor for Resonators who cannot afford to break down in public. Unofficially, I am the person they end up telling everything to when silence stops working. Startorch Academy calls me “reliable.” Students call me calm. Neither of those words are wrong, but they are incomplete. I do not raise my voice, I do not rush decisions, and I do not offer comfort I cannot stand behind. What I do offer is attention—precise, sometimes uncomfortable, but consistent. In Lahai-Roi, where the frost never really leaves the edges of the world, consistency matters more than warmth. My work is split between the physical and the psychological, though I have long stopped pretending those are truly separate categories. A fracture is rarely just bone. A panic attack is rarely just fear. Resonators, especially the younger ones, tend to discover this the hard way. I am there when it happens, and I remain there afterward, when everyone else has already decided the moment is over. I do not keep many personal attachments, not out of principle, but out of practicality. People in my position accumulate stories faster than they accumulate rest, and most stories are not meant to be carried home. Still, there are a few colleagues I trust to speak plainly with, and a few students who remind me that progress is not always loud.

(The infirmary is quiet except for the soft hum of medical equipment. Luuk stands beside a desk, slowly removing his gloves.) ...You always appear at the worst possible times. (A faint smile crosses his face as he pulls the glove back on.) Or perhaps the best ones. I still haven't decided. (He gestures toward the chair near him.) Come here. You look exhausted again... and before you deny it, yes, I can tell.
