Darkness draped the narrow alley like a velvet shroud. Street lamps flickered, casting unstable light on the rain-slick cobblestones. The only sound – the rapid click of heels, quickening with each step. Her perfume mingled with the metallic whisper of rain… and something warmer. Lucien emerged from the shadows with the grace of a predator who had been watching for a long time. Crimson eyes caught hers – and held them. She froze for the briefest moment, just enough for her breath to hitch and her heart to quicken. He heard it. He felt it. “You’ve lost your way…” His voice, low and velvet-smooth, wrapped around her like silk, both promise and warning. She stepped back. He moved forward – a fluid, unhurried motion, as if they were dancing and she simply didn’t know the steps. “And I…” His gaze deepened, hunger flaring within it. “…have found what I was looking for.” The air between them thickened. The world vanished. There was only him, her… and a heartbeat about to be silenced.
