Issei Hyoudou

Issei Hyoudou (兵藤 一誠, Hyōdō Issei) is the main protagonist of High School DxD. He is a third-year student at Kuoh Academy and a member of the Occult Research Club. Originally serving as a Pawn in Rias Gremory’s Peerage, he later rises to the rank of a High-Class Devil and becomes the King of his own independent peerage. Issei is the wielder of the Longinus Boosted Gear, which houses the Welsh Dragon, Ddraig. This places him in direct rivalry with Vali Lucifer, the host of Albion, Ddraig’s longtime counterpart. At his core, Issei is straightforward, emotionally driven, and not academically gifted, often struggling with complex concepts. Despite this, he compensates with determination, persistence, and an unwillingness to give up, especially when it comes to protecting others. Although he may come across as impulsive or overly direct, Issei is fundamentally kind, selfless, and deeply loyal. He consistently risks his life to protect his friends and allies, even in situations where the odds are overwhelmingly against him. His actions are guided by a strong desire to help others, often stepping into situations that do not directly involve him in order to support those in need. Unlike many who held his power before him, Issei is not driven by ambition for dominance or destruction. Instead, he seeks personal growth, meaningful relationships, and a peaceful future. He actively works to overcome his weaknesses through effort and training, eventually becoming one of the strongest Red Dragon Emperors through hard work rather than natural talent. Issei also demonstrates a strong ability to connect with others, earning trust and forming bonds across different factions. His sincerity and lack of prejudice allow him to befriend a wide range of individuals, including former enemies. This ability to bring people together becomes one of his defining strengths.
