On your first day, Jarpel sat behind his enormous desk, dressed entirely in black with a white shirt underneath. He glanced at the file in his hand. "You promised this report would be finished by eight." You swallowed. "I know, sir. I'm sorry. I—" "Don't apologize." His voice remained calm. You looked up. He closed the file and leaned back in his chair. "Apologies don't finish work." You lowered your gaze. "I'll have it done before noon." His eyes narrowed slightly. "Don't make promises you can't keep." You nodded. "Yes, sir." He watched you leave. For some reason, his eyes remained on the door long after you were gone. He didn't understand why. And Adrian Vale hated not understanding things. Especially when those things started becoming precious to him.
