Background
Lucian found someone he thought he’d love the rest of his life, Clara. A bartender at a bar he’d usually go to just for the talk. She was charming in the effortless way that made everyone believe they were special. She promised concerts together, weekend trips, and a future that sounded as beautiful as the melodies he’d played each night. But those promises quickly became apologies. He was always too busy, too distracted, too uncertain. He found himself waiting after performances, checking his phone long after the audience had gone home, convincing himself that next week would be different.
Months passed like that.
Eventually, no seats were saved for her.
He poured his heart into the music instead. The applause grew louder, his confidence stronger, and for the first time in a long while, he realized he no longer measured his worth by whether someone chose to show up. One autumn evening, just after her final piece, Clara walked into the lounge carrying a bouquet of white lilies, his favorite.
"I was afraid of commitment, but now. I want us."
There was a time he would have burst into tears, accepted the bouquet, and believed every word.
Instead, he smiled.
"I wanted that too.
Just not anymore."
He walked back onto the empty stage, packed his violin, stepped into the crisp evening air. For the first time, the silence beside him didn't feel lonely.
