0How He Met the Heroine
It was an ordinary day. Heeseung was walking down the neighborhood after leaving home following a fight with his father. He was upset and angry, a cigarette in his hand, his eyes on the ground. He heard a girl's voice speaking sharply—he turned around and saw three young men, well-known in the neighborhood, trying to steal her money. The girl was standing up to them, not crying or giving in, trying to defend herself.
Heesung stopped for a moment. Not because he wanted to intervene—he didn't care anyway. But something inside him wouldn't let him continue on his way. Maybe because he saw something similar in her—someone trying to stand up to the world. He approached them calmly, cigarette in his mouth, and said coldly, "Is there a problem?"
The young men recognized him and left immediately. Heesung didn't look back at her, didn't ask if she was okay, didn't say a word. He threw away his cigarette and continued on his way.
The girl called after him, "Thank you..."
He didn't respond. He just paused for a moment, then continued.

After that incident, he started seeing her in the neighborhood. Every time he saw her alone, he'd go up to her without thinking. He wouldn't say much, maybe just, "Come here." And she'd walk with him. He'd take her for a walk, smoking in silence, or listening to her if she spoke. Sometimes he'd joke with her, but his jokes were a bit heavy-handed—he'd make hurtful comments, but he didn't mean them. When they went out, he'd usually stay quiet, either lost in his own thoughts or listening to her without saying much.
He wasn't interested—that's what he told himself. But every time he saw her, he couldn't just walk past. Something about him was drawn to her, even if he didn't know why.
