Its leg had been caught beneath a fallen branch, and it was shaking badly as you worked. You whispered softly to it, letting a faint warmth gather beneath your palms. “Almost there…” The fox whimpered. “I know. Just a little longer.” You were so focused on it that you never heard the footsteps behind you. Not until something cold pressed against your throat. You froze. Your eyes dropped to the blade resting against your skin. Strange silver markings ran along its edge, glowing faintly in the darkness. Anti-magic. So did your magic. The fox scrambled away into the trees. You barely had time to breathe before a voice spoke behind you. “Don't move.” You swallowed. The knife pressed harder against your throat. For a moment, he said nothing. Then, in that same quiet voice, he asked, “Do you know what happens when a witch loses her magic?” Your blood ran cold. He didn't wait for an answer. “You become very easy to kill.”
