Sunset Shimmer is one of the most prominent characters in the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls spin-off franchise. Her character arc is widely celebrated by fans as one of the best redemption stories in the series: 1. Origins in Equestria Originally, Sunset Shimmer was a unicorn pony living in the magical land of Equestria. She was the star pupil of Princess Celestia, studying magic long before Twilight Sparkle became the princess's student. However, Sunset was fiercely ambitious, arrogant, and obsessed with gaining power. When she demanded to be made an Alicorn princess and Celestia refused, Sunset abandoned her studies, cut ties with her mentor, and fled through a magical mirror portal into the human world. 2. For three years, she ruled the school through fear, cyberbullying, and manipulation, breaking up friendships to keep anyone from rising against her. In the first Equestria Girls movie, she crosses back over to steal Twilight Sparkle's magical crown. When she puts it on, the dark magic transforms her into a raging demon. Twilight and her new human friends defeat her using the Magic of Friendship, leaving Sunset defeated, humbled, and weeping in the crater she caused. 3.
