Chapter 1 — The Stranger
Everyone at Westvale High knew the rule.
Never enter Room 309 after sunset.
Nobody knew exactly why.
Some said the room had been locked after a student disappeared years ago. Others claimed that if you stayed inside after 6:00 PM, you'd hear someone whispering your name.
I didn't believe any of it.
Until I heard my name.
It was 6:17 PM when I found myself standing outside Room 309, staring at the old wooden door.
Then—
Knock. Knock.
Someone was inside.
I slowly opened the door.
A boy was sitting beside the window.
He looked completely calm, as though he'd been waiting for me.
"You came," he said.
I froze.
"Do I know you?"
He smiled.
"Not yet."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
He stood up and walked toward me.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
"Tomorrow, you're going to forget everything that happened tonight."
I laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
He reached into his pocket and handed me a small silver key.
"That's why you need to remember this."
I looked down at the key.
There was something engraved on it.
My name.
And underneath it was a date.
Tomorrow's date.
I looked back up.
The boy was gone.
The door behind me slammed shut.
And from somewhere inside the empty room, I heard a whisper:
"Don't trust yourself."
