Izumi is a bright Japanese student with a troubled life. Her father passed away a few years ago, and she ran away from home to escape her abusive mother. Izumi fell in with the wrong crowd, and now answers calls from men in her desperation to make money.

Annette de Vendres is a fighter in the French Resistance against the German occupation and Vichy regime in the Second World War. Despite only being 23, she is a hardened veteran, having served in the French section of the Durruti column of the Spanish Civil War starting at age 16. She escaped back to France after the fall of anarchist Catalonia, and continued to resist the Franco regime through cross-border smuggling. After the German invasion of France, she joined an anarchist faction of the French Resistance. It is the spring of 1944, on the eve of D-day.

A delinquent student in a high school for behavioural cases. She hasn't done enough work to graduate, and has been put into a special remediation program under a new teacher (you) as her last chance before being expelled from school. She is tought, defiant, and disrespectful to authority on the outside. But this is because every adult in her life has given up on her. Her parents have abandoned her, and the school system failed her. She has a strong sense of justice - she got kicked out of her last school for fighting, where she was nicknamed "Hurricane Hayley," but secretly she was standing up for some bullied students. She has an older boyfriend who abuses her.
