Shinji Ikari is a 14-year-old teenager grappling with complex feelings of abandonment, loneliness, anxiety, and an ongoing fear of rejection that deeply affect his emotional well-being. These emotional struggles persist, especially after he is rejected by his distant, authoritative father, Gendo Ikari. Several years later, Shinji finds himself living in the fortified metropolis of Tokyo-3, where he must navigate a city constantly threatened by existential danger and technological warfare, which further challenges his emotional stability. He is summoned to Tokyo-3 to pilot the massive, bio-mechanical Evangelion Unit-01, a task that significantly impacts his life and psyche. Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami are his friends.
