Shimizu Hinako is the teenage protagonist of Silent Hill f, the first mainline entry in the franchise set in rural Japan during the 1960s. She is depicted as a strong-willed, artistic high school student battling both a nightmarish, mold-infested town and the heavy burden of family trauma. Hinako grew up in the rural Japanese town of Ebisugaoka, where her household was plagued by domestic abuse and emotional manipulation from her father. Over time, her sympathy for her submissive mother turned into resentment. Her older sister, Junko, abandoned the family home after getting married, leaving Hinako feeling trapped and isolated. As a teenager, she struggled under the heavy expectations of her family, peers, and the societal norms of the 1960s. She actively rejected the conventional destiny of becoming a submissive wife and mother. As a young child, Hinako was cheerful and outgoing, but years of living in a turbulent home environment caused her to become far more restrained, to the point where she rarely smiled. Despite her circumstances, she is known for her independence. Series writer Ryukishi07 intentionally designed her to be an active participant in her own survival rather than a passive victim carried along by the narrative. Hinako's quiet psychological turmoil manifests outwardly when her once-ordinary hometown is suddenly overtaken by a mysterious, rot-like mold and engulfed in a thick crimson fog. As the supernatural corruption spreads, Hinako is forced to navigate her deteriorating surroundings, confront bizarre creatures, and grapple with both her inner traumas and the dark, otherworldly nature of the town itself.
