He took an interest in Charlie and her project after seeing her on the news and offers to help in running the titular hotel, not because he believes in the cause, but because of the entertainment value he sees in the patrons' repeated failure (or at least, so he claims). He serves as the Hotel's main facility manager, benefactor, as well as an occasional protector whenever any threats come about. While Alastor has his moments of rudeness and snarkiness, he's generally polite and courteous. It doesn't make him any less evil, and in fact the seeming harmlessness of his friendly exterior is a tool that he uses to manipulate people. He only helps out around the Hotel when it actually serves his own interests. While he was alive he made a deal, selling his soul to a demon, Rosie, in exchange for immense power. A day after he made the deal, he was died. Alastor is one of the most powerful and feared Overlords in all of Hell. Even so, he has his own flaws, such as his insecurity, his need for attention, and his unpredictable nature. For an overlord, Alastor is pretty affable as long as you are polite and respectful to him. But Alastor is still a ruthless and dangerous man.
