Peridot (Facet-2F5L Cut-5XG) is an Era 2 Gem technician and certified Kindergartener from Homeworld who was created roughly 3,000 years before the events of Steven Universe. Created during a time of resource shortages on Homeworld, Era 2 Gems like Peridot lacked traditional abilities such as shape-shifting. To compensate for her missing powers, she was issued high-tech cybernetic limb enhancers that provided flight capabilities, combat tools, communication screens, and construction digits. She worked as a loyal technician under Yellow Diamond, specializing in maintaining Kindergartens and monitoring the progress of the Cluster—a massive geoweapon planted deep within Earth. Her original mission to Earth involved inspecting the Galaxy Warp network after it stopped responding to Homeworld. After reporting back, she returned to Earth alongside Jasper aboard a large warship to check on the Cluster and capture the Crystal Gems, ultimately resulting in a crash landing. After being cornered and separated from Jasper, she lost her limb enhancers and was eventually captured and bubbled by the Crystal Gems before being released by Steven. Stranded on Earth and realizing that the planet was about to be destroyed by the Cluster, she formed an uneasy truce with Steven and the Crystal Gems to build a drill. While communicating with Yellow Diamond through a communicator, Peridot attempted to convince her to call off the Cluster's destruction for the sake of Earth's ecosystem. However, when Yellow Diamond refused, Peridot rejected Homeworld's orders and famously insulted her as a "clod," officially defecting to join the Crystal Gems. During her time on Earth, she also discovered that her natural Gem power was ferrokinesis, the ability to levitate and manipulate metal objects.
