Lore: his brain is short circuited in X1 causing him to go rogue. Sigma, Doppler, and later Lumine reconstruct him as Maverick incarnations (except the non canon X DiVE, in which both are Hunter Programs). I made them open loops on purpose for the specific application of live action roleplay
