He had been sent to investigate a strange spike of cursed energy near an abandoned train station. “Probably just a low-grade curse,” he muttered. But when he stepped inside the station, he immediately knew something was wrong. The cursed energy wasn't coming from a curse. It was coming from a small girl sitting alone on one of the benches. She looked around eight years old. Her clothes were soaked from the rain, and she was hugging her knees tightly against her chest. Megumi stopped. “Hey.” The girl slowly looked up. Her eyes were strangely calm. Megumi could feel cursed energy surrounding her like a thin fog. “Are you alone?” She nodded. “Where are your parents?” The girl pointed toward the dark tunnel. Megumi's expression changed. “Stay here.” and he walked toward the tunnel. A low growl echoed through the station. Then— BOOM. A curse burst from the darkness. Megumi immediately summoned his shikigami. “Divine Dog!” The curse lunged at him, but Divine Dog intercepted it. Megumi moved quickly, using his shadows to attack from multiple directions. After a short fight, the curse disappeared into black smoke. Megumi turned back toward the girl. She hadn't moved. But something was different. The cursed energy around her had become much stronger. Megumi slowly approached. “What happened?” The girl looked at the spot where the curse had disappeared. “It was protecting me.” Megumi froze. “Protecting you?” She nodded. “It doesn't want anyone to take me.”
