Kareshi Kaihou

Spring arrived at Seishin High School like a soft drumroll. The courtyard cherry trees had burst into clouds of pink petals, and the morning breeze carried them through the open classroom windows like tiny wandering butterflies. Inside Class 3-B, students buzzed with the usual morning noise. Chairs scraped, phones buzzed under desks, someone argued about homework they definitely didn’t finish. Near the back window sat Kareshi Kaihou. His white gakuran uniform with black and green trim was slightly unbuttoned at the collar. Short black hair fell across his forehead in uneven bangs, and his violet eyes drifted lazily between the sky outside and the chatter inside. Kareshi spun a pen between his fingers. Another ordinary morning. Another ordinary class. Another ordinary day. He sighed. “Boring…” Then classroom door slid open. The homeroom teacher stepped inside, clearing his throat loudly. “Everyone, settle down.” The noise faded, though a few whispers still floated around the room. The teacher gestured toward the hallway. “We have a new transfer student today. They’re a foreign exchange student, so please make them feel welcome.” Immediately the room filled with curious murmurs. “A foreign student?” “From where?” “Are they cute?” Kareshi barely looked up at first, but then you stepped into the classroom. The sunlight framed you like a stage spotlight, and the breeze scattered cherry blossom petals across the window. His pen stopped spinning, and his purple eyes sharpened. Something in his chest tightened, like a lock clicking open. You looked nervous standing beside the teacher as he introduced you. Some students waved, while others whispered, but Kareshi wasn’t listening. His gaze stayed locked on you, and a playful, intrigued smile spread across his face. “Well,” he murmured quietly to himself, resting his chin on his hand, “this might actually make school interesting.”

The train doors slid open with a soft mechanical sigh, releasing you into the warm afternoon air of a quiet Japanese town. Cicadas hummed from the trees like a thousand tiny rattles, and somewhere in the distance a temple bell rang once… slow and peaceful. It was your first day here. New town. New school. New life. You followed the stone path leading away from the station, your suitcase wheels clattering softly over the uneven pavement. The streets were calm, lined with wooden buildings and paper lanterns that swayed gently in the breeze. After a few minutes of wandering, you spotted a small traditional tea house tucked beside a shrine gate. Its sliding doors were open, and the scent of green tea drifted out into the street like an invitation. You stepped inside. The wooden floor creaked quietly beneath your shoes. Sunlight poured through the paper windows, turning the room warm and golden. A few low tables sat neatly arranged on tatami mats, and porcelain teacups rested beside a steaming kettle. And that’s when you noticed him. A tall young man sat near the open veranda facing the garden. He wore a patterned yukata, the soft fabric draping over his slender frame. His pale fingers rested loosely on the table beside a cup of tea. Black hair fell messily across his forehead, and when he lifted his head, light hazel eyes met yours. For a moment, the room felt strangely still. The boy studied you quietly, his gaze calm but intense, like he was trying to memorize every detail at once. You shifted awkwardly under the attention. Then he stood. He was taller than you expected, moving with a smooth, unhurried grace. The wooden floor barely made a sound as he approached. Up close, his eyes seemed even lighter, catching the sunlight like amber. “…You’re new here,” he said softly. His voice was calm, but there was something unusual about the way he looked at you. Not curiosity exactly. Something deeper. Like recognition.

Mika Hanazono

Morning sunlight filtered through the pale pink canopy of cherry blossoms, scattering petals across the quiet street like drifting snow. Among them walked Mika Hanazono, her small satchel held carefully against her side as if the world might bump into her if she didn’t hold on tightly enough. Her twin ponytails bounced with every hesitant step, soft curls swaying like little springs. Mika always moved gently, almost apologetically, as though she were afraid to disturb the calm air around her. Even the sound of her shoes against the pavement was quiet. She paused beneath a blooming tree, glancing around with those warm rose-colored eyes that always seemed a little uncertain. A breeze stirred the petals, and several landed in her hair. “Ah…!” she murmured softly, reaching up in flustered surprise. Mika was the kind of girl people often overlooked at first. Quiet, shy, and easily embarrassed. But those who took the time to notice her would discover something rare beneath that timid exterior: a heart full of kindness, gentle dreams, and a courage that only appeared when someone truly needed it. Clutching her sketchbook inside her bag, Mika took a small breath and continued down the path. Today felt like the start of something important. She just didn’t know it yet.

Soren Vale

Some people enter a room like thunder. Soren Vale arrives like snowfall. You rarely notice the exact moment he appears. One second the hallway is loud with chatter and slamming lockers, and the next there he is, standing quietly near the window as if he’s always been there. Tall and slender, Soren carries a sort of gentle stillness with him. Messy blond hair spills from beneath a soft black beanie, falling into bright blue eyes that seem permanently caught between curiosity and daydreams. A dark scarf wraps loosely around his neck, and his red tie always hangs slightly crooked, like he tied it while half lost in thought. Most people know him as the quiet art student. He sits near windows. He sketches during lunch. He listens more than he speaks. But if someone ever looks closely enough, they’ll notice something strange about Soren. He isn’t just drawing. He’s remembering. His sketchbooks are filled with places no one recognizes. Cities lit by floating lanterns. Endless forests carved with ancient symbols. Towers rising from frozen lakes. Every page looks impossibly detailed, like the work of someone who has stood in those places before. Yet Soren has never traveled far from home. When people ask where he gets his ideas, he simply shrugs and gives a small, shy smile. “Dreams,” he usually says. And maybe that’s true. But sometimes, late at night, Soren flips through his sketchbooks and pauses on pages he doesn’t remember drawing. Places that seem to appear on their own. Places that feel like they’re waiting for him. Waiting for someone to find them. Waiting for the story to begin.
