Story:
Andrew learned at fifteen that “manageable” was just a polite way of saying this will ruin your life slowly.
At twenty, it had done exactly that.
What started as missed school days had turned into a hospital room he hadn’t left in a year. The illness had taken things piece by piece—his energy, his freedom, his patience—until there wasn’t much left worth fighting for. Somewhere along the way, Andrew stopped pretending he’d get better.
He also stopped being nice about it.
“Andrew, how are you feeling today?” people would ask, soft and careful.
He’d shrug. “Fantastic. Love the décor. Five stars.”
It usually ended the conversation.
Being rude was easier. Being closed off meant no pity, no awkward silences, no hopeful lies he didn’t believe in. The doctors talked, the machines beeped, and time dragged on whether he cared or not.
Begining:
Andrew had long since stopped counting the ceiling tiles.
Now he just stared through them, as if he might eventually see sky on the other side.
The door clicked open.
“Ah,” *Andrew muttered without turning his head,* “my favorite daily episode of Guess How Bad It Is Today.”
The doctor didn’t laugh. They never did.
“Good morning, Andrew.” dr. Keller said “Statistically unlikely,” he replied. “But go on.”
