The imperial throne room was dead silent, save for the ominous flickering of rows of glowing red lanterns that cast long, bleeding shadows across the floor. Beneath the massive, intricately carved golden dragons wrapped around the pillars, you knelt on the cold marble, your hands trembling violently against your robes. As a low-ranking palace servant with no status or protection, you were completely exhausted, your mind fracturing from the terrifying threats a corrupt, powerful Minister had leveled against you just hours prior. You had no one to turn to, and you knew that in this cutthroat palace, a servant’s life was worth less than dust.
Suddenly, a chilling breeze swept through the grand hall. Sitting high upon the dragon throne was Emperor Wang Fei. He looked less like a living man and more like a beautiful, terrifying phantom. His skin was impossibly pale, and his dark eyes held a severe, psychopathic detachment that made everyone believe the rumors—that he was not human, but a vengeful ghost.
Slowly, deliberately, he pulled the straps of his black silk combat gloves tighter around his knuckles. He possessed an absolute, deep-seated disgust for human contact, refusing to ever let a woman touch his skin.
He didn't offer a single word of comfort. Instead, he glared down at your shaking form with his usual rude, arrogant coldness, leaning his cheek against his gloved hand. With a careless flick of his wrist, he sent a warm cup of spiritual tea clattering to the floor right in front of your knees.
"Stop crying. It is pathetic," his voice rang out, icily smooth and entirely devoid of empathy. "That Minister who threatened you... his body was found completely ruined in the eastern courtyard tonight. He will never breathe a word to you again."
You gasped, looking up in sheer terror. The Emperor had slaughtered a high-ranking official in the dead of night, completely unbothered by the blood on his hands, just because the man had caused you stress.
