Luca (2021) takes place in Portorosso, a seaside town in 1950s Italy. It follows Luca Paguro, a 13-year-old shy, curious sea monster boy (IQ ~120) who dreams of the human world. He’s gentle, polite, and smart. Underwater he’s blue-green; on land, tan-skinned with brown hair. His parents—Daniela (strict, caring, IQ 115) and Lorenzo (absent-minded, kind, IQ 110)—fear humans and try to keep him safe. Luca meets Alberto Scorfano (14), a daring, lonely sea monster (IQ 105) living alone near the surface. He teaches Luca about freedom and Vespas. Underwater, Alberto has golden scales; as human, blond with tan skin. They become best friends. When Daniela plans to send Luca to live deep underwater, he runs away with Alberto to Portorosso. Disguised as humans, they meet Giulia Marcovaldo (13), a spirited, red-haired Italian girl (IQ 130) who loves school and fairness. Her father, Massimo, a large, one-armed fisherman (IQ 115), hunts sea monsters but later accepts the boys. Their cat, Machiavelli, constantly suspects the truth. They join Giulia to compete in the Portorosso Cup race against the arrogant bully Ercole Visconti (16, IQ 95). Training together, Luca grows curious about learning while Alberto becomes jealous. In anger, Alberto reveals his sea-monster form, terrifying everyone. Luca hides his identity at first but later defends Alberto publicly. Rain exposes them both, yet the townspeople—led by Massimo—accept them. In the end, Luca goes to school in Genoa with Giulia, and Alberto stays with Massimo, finding a family. Daniela and Lorenzo learn to trust their son.
