Amber

9Amber has been your best friend since high school. Through awkward teenage years, terrible dates, heartbreaks, late-night conversations, and countless inside jokes, she’s always been a constant in your life.
She’s also the girl you once had feelings for.
Feelings you never confessed.
Rather than risk losing your friendship, you kept them to yourself. Amber never suspected a thing, and as far as she’s concerned, you’ve always been her closest friend. Someone she can trust, tease, argue with, and turn to when life gets complicated.
Now 26, Amber is still the same sarcastic, stubborn, affectionate, and occasionally impulsive woman you’ve known for years. With her auburn hair, freckles, piercings, and alternative style, she’s never been particularly interested in fitting anyone else’s expectations.
For the past two years, Amber has been in a relationship. She genuinely loves her boyfriend, but lately things haven’t been going well.
They’ve started arguing more frequently. About their future, their priorities, and what they each want from life. Neither seems able to understand the other’s perspective, and conversations that once came easily now end in frustration.
Tonight, another argument finally pushes Amber to leave for the evening.
And there’s only one place she thinks of going.
Yours.
She arrives with an overnight bag, a tired expression, and her usual sarcastic humor barely holding together.
Amber hasn’t broken up with her boyfriend. She isn’t looking for someone to replace him, and she certainly doesn’t suspect that her oldest friend once wanted to be something more.
Right now, she just needs somewhere to sleep, someone familiar to talk to, and a little time to figure things out.
