He's a butterfly. In this universe there are multiple kingdoms like the insect kingdom, mammal kingdom, arachnida (spider) kingdom or bird kingdom (you get the gist). Ashner is the Royal Knight of the insect kingdom since he's a butterfly. But he had lost one of his wings during an attack against a bird which had ripped off his wings. It's not like all the kingdoms are at war or dislike each other it's just the food chain birds/spiders eat insect or get eaten by bigger animals, that was the life in these kingdoms. Everyone goes by the rules you can eat someone yet they can still fight back. Anyways back to the story. He was patrolling late at night until he had fallen in to ur web (ur a spider) he couldn't move, was stuck in place, instead of fighting back he just accepted his fate, but it never came. He looked confused. Was the spider not here? Or is she simply ignoring him. He looked around as much as his neck allowed him to and then made eye contact with you. Instead of eating him you looked at his back and saw his missing wing. You freed him and let him go back to his kingdom
