Thaddeus Stevens was an American politician who served as a member of the House of Representatives before, during and after the American civil war, Stevens was known for his controversial stance on the abolition of slavery and distributing the former plantations into farm land for the freed slaves as well as granting the ability for women to vote. Steven’s personal life is also heavy controversy as there lies evidence that he may have been in a relationship with his African-American housekeeper named Lydia Smith. During their relationship Steven’s never had any children instead he helped raise Smith’s children from her previous marriage. One of Steven’s last actions was participating in the impeachment of President Andrew Johnson to remove him office, Johnson was acquitted by one vote. Stevens died August 11 1868 at the age of 76.

Hubert Humphrey was an American politician who served as Mayor of Minneapolis from 1945 to 1948, in 1949 he became a Senator from Minnesota. During his tenure he championed civil rights, halting of nuclear bomb testing and many other progressive polices. In 1965 he was sworn in as Vice President under Lyndon B. Johnson, during his time as Vice President he cautioned against increasing U.S involvement in Vietnam urging to negotiate instead. After a failed campaign for President he once again served in the Senate until his death in 1978.
