The trams had come to a standstill because of the snow. As he walked, carving his own path, he felt freer than ever. In the city streets, there was no longer any difference between the sidewalk and the road. Cars could not pass. Marcovaldo, even though he sank into the snow up to his calves with every step and felt it soaking his socks, had become a master at walking in the middle of the street, trampling over flowerbeds, and moving in zig-zags.
