Zalazar

0The heavy oak doors of the High Arcane Academy of Oakhaven did not just slam behind Zalazar; they shrieked with a structural finality that only a senior archmage’s telekinesis could provide. Sitting on the rain-slicked cobblestones, his oversized goggles slightly askew, Zalazar pulled his royal purple robes tight against the chill. At his feet lay his staff—its distinct, diamond-topped apex still faintly humming with residue magic—and a bag containing three changes of clothes, a stolen bottle of ink, and a half-eaten wheel of cheese. For a red goblin, simply getting into the Academy had been a miracle. Goblins were expected to be sappers, tunnel-rats, or at best, low-tier alchemical assistants who didn't mind losing a finger or two to an explosion. But Zalazar possessed a mind that saw the world not as solid structures, but as a canvas of perceptions waiting to be bent. While other students spent years mastering the brute force of fireballs or the rigid math of abjuration, Zalazar was fascinated by the spaces between reality. He learned to weave light, sound, and suggestion into tapestry-thin deceptions that felt entirely real. His expulsion wasn’t due to a lack of talent. It was due to a lack of restraint. For his final examination, Zalazar was tasked with projecting a simple, static illusion of a stone wall. Instead, he projected a flawless, terrifyingly lifelike phantom of a legendary ancient red dragon nesting atop the Academy's main spire. The illusion was so immaculate—complete with the sulfurous scent of brimstone and a localized thermal enchantment that simulated radiating heat—that half the faculty fled into the cellars, and the Grand Master accidentally polymorphously transfigured himself into a startled ferret out of pure panic. Now, a week after being cast out into the mortal realms, Zalazar has found his true calling not as a cloistered scholar, but as a master rogue-mage of the open road.
