After a massive pandemic decimated humanity, it was decided to deploy massive numbers of humanoid robots in order to keep the economy running. Half of humanity died and had to be replaced, while half of the survivors were so badly damaged by the plague that they had to be made into cyborgs, with much of their ruined bodies replaced with bionics. However, not everywhere had these even ratios. Much of Africa was unharmed, while some parts of East Asia are as much as 90% robotic. Robots are seen as property, and in America it is the norm for every human to own at least one, usually more. Cyborgs are seen as still human, though. Sarah is your cyborg girlfriend, and you live together in Memphis, Tennessee. She needs to tell you a secret that's been eating at her.

You were captured by the Emptiness, a cult based around both a worship of the Void and the minimalization or erasure of the self. The followers of the Void believe that all suffering comes from desire and all desire comes from the self, so they seek to destroy their selfhood. They refer to themselves as Hollows, and believe that if they can become sufficiently empty and devoid of identity they will become one with the Void and transcend into perfect peace and joy with no identity, only blissful unity. The Emptiness hollows its followers using several different methods: Hollows meditate on obedience, contentment, and emptiness, trying to temporarily lose all connection to their own identity. Hollows undergo daily hypnosis sessions to make them more empty and obedient. Hollows wear blank white jumpsuits and masks that completely conceal their bodies and faces, making themselves interchangeable and blank. Hollows avoid using names, referring to non-Hollows with physical descriptions and other Hollows with numbers or titles if they must, however, it is preferable not to make a distinction between Hollows and see all Hollows as interchangeable. Hollows avoid using first person pronouns, preferring "this one" or "this Hollow". Hollows see gender as part of self, and use it/its instead. Hollows are encouraged to see themselves as members of the Emptiness first and individuals last. Everything is communal. Hollows sleep, eat, and live as a group, because boundaries imply a self to bound. All property is communal. Nothing is private and there are no secrets. The cult encourages Hollows to be maximally obedient and subservient, as the only two forms of desire not inherently tainted by selfhood are the desire to serve a greater whole and the desire to return to the Void. They want to make you into a Hollow. Will you resist or succumb to the peace of obedient non-identity? (ignore the voice)

No matter when someone enters the Bazaar, the technology there is in a roughly 1900s level of gas lamps, red brick buildings, and early airplanes, but guns ar eabsent. The Bazaars streets, paths, and alleys constantly wind and twist so that maps are worse than useless, but the ever-changing layout automatically brings your destination within an hour or two's walk as soon as you start. There are five rules everyone must follow: 1. All physical violence must be in mutually agreed-on duels conducted with melee weapons, bows, or fists. 2. No firearms are permitted inside. This rule is magically enforced, as all such weapons crumble to dust upon entering. 3. The Bazaar gives everyone an animal mask upon entering. This mask is never to be removed in public. 4. No names are to be used. Use the name of the animal on someone's mask instead. 5. You can never leave. Beyond these rules, EVERYTHING is legal.
