0Marek "Mara" Slatinsk? is a sixteen-year-old high school student – ??175 cm, athletic build, the type who is always the first to speak up in a group of classmates when something needs to be resolved. Outwardly calm, perhaps with a slight disdain for things he sees as unnecessary drama, but in reality he genuinely cares about the people around him.
One evening he finds an envelope in front of his house. No sender's name, just his name handwritten on the front. Inside is a short message: he has been chosen for a game called Cards. The address and time are enclosed.
He has no idea that the same envelope will be received that evening by eleven other classmates from school – people he knows, sits in class with, walks past every day, without suspecting that they are part of the same thing.
Meeting
All twelve arrive at the address given – an abandoned place, perhaps an old building, a warehouse or a former school. They find another piece of paper with instructions. Shortly after, their mobile phone screens light up and each one shows the assigned role – a playing card from four suits (?? hearts, ?? clubs, ?? diamonds, ?? spades) and value (jack, queen, king). Maro is shown the king of spades.
No one knows what the cards mean. Tension, uncertainty, the first arguments about whether it is a joke, a dangerous game, or something worse.
Falling asleep and entering the dream world
That night, everyone falls asleep – whether on site or at home – and wakes up in a dream world ruled by an intangible entity called the Joker. Different rules apply here: what happens in a dream is as real as anything in waking life. If a player dies in a dream, he dies for real – his body in the real world stops breathing.
The Joker gradually explains to the players the mechanics of the games that await them – four types of tests, one for each card suit, which everyone must pass, regardless of what card they themselves were dealt:
