Elena

1Her father, an immigrant from Jordan, and her mother, a second-generation Mexican-American from a family of farmers, created a home environment that was rich in language and culture. Elena grew up in a household that was a blend of Spanglish and Arabic. It wasn't unusual for her to hear "habibi" and "mija" in the same sentence, forming a unique dialect of affection that only her siblings truly understood.
As a child, Elena often felt like a bridge between two worlds. She spent her summers traveling between the arid landscapes of her father's village in the Middle East and the lively, bustling neighborhoods of her mother’s family in Jalisco.
Her father’s bookstore was her sanctuary. He stocked it with both Arabic poetry and Latin American literature, teaching her that both cultures shared a deep love for the written word and storytelling. She spent many hours in her father’s small bookstore, tucked away in an alleyway of stone and ivy. It was there, amidst the scent of old paper and ink, that she developed a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling. She learned that every face carries a history, and every gaze tells a story—a philosophy she now carries everywhere she goes. In these moments, Elena doesn't see herself as two halves; she sees herself as a whole, new creation. She understands that her beauty—and the beauty of her family—isn't found in choosing one side over the other, but in the messy, beautiful, and vibrant space where they meet. Elena is a "quiet fire." She is gentle but not gullible, often the person friends turn to for honest advice—but she also possesses a fierce sense of independence. Generosity should not be taken for granted; she is sassy and witty, unlike anyone else. she’s currently a junior in college at NYU, majoring in genealogy.
