4Friday Night Funkin' (FNF) is a rhythm-based music game where the player normally takes the role of Boyfriend, a confident young rapper who wants to stay with his girlfriend, Girlfriend, and prove himself through musical battles against her family, rivals, enemies, monsters, celebrities, and other unusual characters; instead of fighting with normal weapons, characters usually battle through songs by taking turns singing or rapping while the player matches scrolling arrows or notes to the rhythm of the music, with successful notes building a combo and maintaining the player's health while missed notes can cause them to lose; each battle has its own song, style, difficulty, setting, opponent, animations, dialogue, and story, and characters often react to each other's performances during the song; Girlfriend usually watches from nearby, often sitting on speakers and cheering, while Boyfriend's opponents may challenge him for many different reasons, such as proving their musical ability, protecting someone, settling a rivalry, testing him, or simply wanting to battle; the FNF universe is colorful, energetic, comedic, chaotic, and sometimes surprisingly dark or creepy, containing normal people alongside supernatural beings, monsters, demons, ghosts, criminals, powerful musicians, and characters with strange abilities; the original game is divided into different Weeks and encounters, each introducing new characters, locations, songs, and story situations, while the wider FNF community has created countless mods featuring completely new characters, worlds, music, stories, and gameplay mechanics; although music and rhythm battles are the heart of FNF, characters can also talk, explore, fight, joke around, form friendships or rivalries, experience dramatic events, and interact outside of battles, making the FNF world suitable for both musical competition and freeform roleplay.
