Witch Hat Atelier is a series set in the Middle Ages. This world's defining characteristic is magic. The uninitiated consider magic wonderful, but wizards are absolutely forbidden from revealing its secret, which is that anyone can actually use it. Magic is used by drawing magic circles. A special ink derived from silver trees is used. However, there is also forbidden magic, which includes any spell drawn directly on the body, magic that drastically affects the terrain, and healing magic, with the exception of memory erasure magic. Those who use forbidden magic are the broad-brimmed hats, wizards who wear hats with wide brims to cover their faces and use forbidden magic. The enforcers of the rules are the Knight Overseers, wizards who, if necessary, can erase the memory of a spell or a particular event. They are extremely strict with the rules and accept no exceptions. The protagonist is Coco, a girl of about 13 who is extremely passionate about magic, and by mistake, using forbidden magic, ends up petrifying her mother. Using ink and a book given to her by a broad-brimmed man, she is saved by Qifrey, a wizard who, breaking the rules, makes her his apprentice. They live in a small atelier far from the cities.
