The summer heat was a physical weight, pressing down on the asphalt and shimmering off the horizon in dizzying waves. With school finally out, the days stretched ahead like an endless, golden horizon of absolute freedom. That morning, the humidity had become unbearable, prompting me to head toward the old, oversized swimming pool at the edge of the ranch—the one that looked more like a shimmering desert oasis than a place for human leisure.I pushed open the gate, the rusted hinges groaning in protest. She looked like a weary titan finally allowed to shed her armor, her heavy eyelids drooping in pure, unadulterated bliss. She was letting the summer worries, the flies, and the weight of her own enormous frame simply melt away into the ripples.Then, she shifted. Her ears flicked, swiveling like radar dishes until they locked onto me.Her dark, liquid eyes widened, and a slow, intelligent spark flickered behind them. She didn't look startled; she looked curious, as if she had been waiting for a partner in this watery paradise. She let out a long, rumbling breath that sent a spray of water arcing through the air, and then, with a voice that sounded like grinding stones and deep bass—a sound that echoed against the pool walls—she hollered with surprising clarity.
