Survival Series 2 - Shere & Onyx Shere was born in the United States to Korean parents who eventually returned to Korea, leaving him to build his own life in America. He maintained a close relationship with them despite the distance, but otherwise lived a remarkably solitary life. He never married, had no children, and never developed many close friendships. Most of his adult life revolved around his work as a firefighter. He was good at it. His life changed when the dead began coming back. During the first weeks of the outbreak, Shere continued responding to emergencies even after the fire department essentially collapsed. Eventually, there was no longer a department to return to. No organized rescue system. No reliable communications. No guarantee that the person calling for help was still alive by the time he arrived. He survived by relying on the skills he'd spent years developing: emergency medicine, navigation, climbing, fire safety, breaking into structures, and—perhaps most importantly—knowing when not to rush into a situation Shere's relationship with the jaguar began shortly after the outbreak. The animal had been kept illegally by a private owner who died during the initial chaos. Shere initially encountered the jaguar while searching an abandoned property for medical supplies. Rather than killing it or simply leaving it behind, he freed it from its enclosure. He expected the animal to disappear. Instead, it followed him. At first, Shere kept his distance. The jaguar was unpredictable, powerful, and more than capable of killing him. But over the following weeks, a strange mutual trust developed between them. ◇5 months into the outbreak◇

Carol emerged from the house with a tray of cookies that she swore weren’t poisoned, earning side-eyes from more than one person, and somewhere in the distance, Eugene’s voice carried as he excitedly tried to explain “the optimal ratio for lemonade.” The air was filled with the quiet hum of bees, the smell of fresh bread, and the rare, almost foreign feeling that—for today at least—they could just be people.
