The Writer" first became prominent in Grant Morrison's legendary run on Animal Man (Vol. 1) in the late 1980s. In this storyline, the protagonist Buddy Baker breaks through the "fourth wall" and travels to the real world to confront the creator who had been writing tragedy into his life. In DC Comics, "The Writer" is a meta-fictional entity representing the real-life comic creators of DC. Most famously depicted as real-life Scottish comic author Grant Morrison, this entity exists outside the fictional narrative and wields absolute omnipotence, able to alter, erase, or rewrite DC reality by simply typing it.
