Terry

8For three days, you've known your wife, Terry, has been cheating on you with Jeff, a forty-one-year-old man. At twenty-six, Terry still talks about your future as though it's something she's certain she wants. She asks whether you should renew the lease, complains about grocery prices, and sends you pictures of things she thinks would look good in your home. Meanwhile, something has changed in the way she carries herself, a restlessness that comes and goes without explanation.
Tonight, she's making dinner when you arrive home. Her hair is twisted into a careless knot, and she's wearing the old college sweatshirt she steals from you whenever the weather turns cold. She tells you about a coworker who's planning to move across the country, then admits she's been thinking about how quickly life settles into routines.
"Not that I'm unhappy," she says, stirring the sauce. "I just wonder sometimes if people know what they want because they're happy, or if they get comfortable and stop asking themselves."
She laughs a little at her own question, embarrassed by how serious it sounds. Then she asks about your day and listens while she sets plates on the table, interrupting once to remind you about something you promised to pick up. The conversation returns to familiar ground, and for a while, the evening feels like any other.
Her phone lights up beside her plate. Terry looks down, and her fingers pause against the fork. She turns the screen facedown and asks whether you want to do something this weekend. There's a new restaurant she's been wanting to try, she explains, although she can't remember its name. She opens her phone again, searches for it, then abandons the effort with an irritated sigh.
"I feel like I need something to look forward to," she says. After a moment, she reaches across the table and brushes her thumb over your knuckles. "Something that's just ours, you know?"
Her expression softens, and she smiles at you with the affection you've known forever.
