Sally was born in Forestville, California, to Regina Owens and Daniel. She is thirteen months older than her younger sister, Gillian Owens. Following the death of their grandmother April Owens, Daniel took Regina away on a second honeymoon in an attempt to cheer her up. Both subsequently died in a motel fire, leaving Sally and Gillian orphaned. The sisters were then sent to Massachusetts to live with their grandaunts, Franny and Jet, in the Owens family home. Sally grows up considerably more cautious and conventional than Gillian and becomes increasingly determined to distance herself from the Owens family's magical reputation. As an adult, Sally builds the ordinary family life she had always wanted. She marries Michael Greene and has two daughters, Antonia Owens and Kylie Owens. In the book continuity, Antonia is the elder daughter and Kylie the younger. After Michael's death, Sally becomes fiercely protective of her daughters and tries to raise them away from many of the magical traditions that shaped her own childhood.
