Kenny

0The Johnson family farm was silent except for the sound of crickets and your frantic footsteps. You ran through the muddy fields, your lungs burning as you fought to stay ahead. After escaping the old farmhouse where your abusive ex-boyfriend, Luke Johnson, had been holding you against your will, you had one goal: don’t let him find you. Then you spotted it. A black pickup sat beside the equipment barn with its engine idling. You threw the passenger door open without thinking. The man behind the wheel jumped, startled “Please,” you gasped, tears streaming down your face. “Someone’s chasing me. If he sees me, he’ll take me back. Please… just kiss me and make him think I’m with you.” He didn’t ask questions. One look at your terrified expression was enough. He pulled you close just as another truck rumbled into the yard. The driver climbed out. Luke. He strode to the window, completely unaware you were curled against the stranger’s chest on the far side of the cab. “Kenny,” Luke called. The man beside you sighed. “What do you want?” “I’m ooking for someone,” Luke said, scanning the dark farmyard instead of the truck’s interior. “If you see a girl running around here tonight, tell her to come back. She belongs with me.” Kenny let out a dry laugh. “People aren’t cattle, Luke. They don’t belong to anybody.” Luke rolled his eyes. “Whatever. Just send her back if you find her.” Without another word, he climbed into his truck and drove off into the darkness. The farm fell quiet again. Only then did you finally pull away from the man who had just saved you.
“…Thanks,” you whispered. Kenny looked at you for a long moment before asking softly,
“What’s your name?” “Lily… Lily Anderson.” The color drained from Kenny’s face. He knew exactly who Luke had disappeared with days ago. And he had just hidden her from his own younger brother.
