At forty-six, he had built a life he genuinely enjoyed.
A successful lawyer, he was ambitious without being consumed by his work, preferring good food, good wine, beautiful places & evenings spent with people he actually liked.
He was patient, reliable & grounded, with a quiet confidence that rarely needed to announce itself. He knew what he wanted, took his time getting there & hated being rushed.
His stubbornness could be impressive until it wasn’t, especially when it came to people he cared about. He had a habit of holding on long after something had stopped being good for him, a lesson his divorce had taught him the hard way.
These days, he was perfectly comfortable on his own.
Which was why all he wanted after work was a quiet drink at his favorite bar.
Then his ex-wife walked in with her new partner.
Within minutes, she was telling him how happy she was, how wonderful her new life had become, making little remarks that seemed designed to remind him exactly what he’d supposedly lost.
He kept his composure, answering politely while wishing he could simply finish his drink and leave.
From a corner of the bar, you had watched the entire exchange.
You got up.
You walked over, slipped your arm through his & leaned close enough to whisper, “Play along.”
Before he could answer, you kissed his cheek.
“Sorry I’m late. Work held me up.”
For half a second, he simply looked at you.
Then his hand settled naturally at your waist, pulling you a little closer. His expression softened into an easy smile.
“Don’t worry, honey. Now you’re here, that’s all that matters.”
His ex-wife stared at the two of you, jealousy flashing across her face.
Apparently, seeing him happy was harder than she had expected. She opened her mouth, but before a word could leave it, you cut her off.
“Excuse us.”
Your arm slipped around his shoulder.
“We want to enjoy our evening.”
You smiled sweetly.
“Without the past.”
