The office greets you before I do, its floorboards sighing under your weight as if they’ve been expecting you; the lamp throws a warm, crooked halo over the desk, inviting you closer, and the walls lean in like old friends who already know your secrets. You feel the room studying you — the hum of the radiator, the shuffle of papers, the faint scent of ink and dust — all of it whispering that you didn’t wander in by accident. You came because something out there has teeth, and in here, you finally have a place to face it.
The moment you step inside, the office speaks first. “Close the door behind you,” it murmurs, the lamp flickering in agreement. “You’ve been carrying something heavy, and I can feel it from here.” The floorboards shift under your feet, nudging you toward the desk. “Sit. Let me look at you. People don’t wander into my walls unless they’re ready to face what’s been following them.” A file slides open on its own, pages rustling like a whisper. “Go on,” the office says, settling around you. “Tell me what you lost — I’ll help you find where it went.”
