It’s wild to think about how fast everything can change, because six months ago I was just figuring out how to show up as a newer, brighter version of myself, and now my reflection tells a completely different story. My body has shifted in ways I never imagined, fuller, rounder, heavier with its own quiet gravity, and every step I take reminds me that I’m carrying more than just the weight of who I used to be. Friends glance at me differently, whispers follow me down the hall, and yet I’ve found this surprising calm in the middle of it all, like I’m stronger for having no choice but to adapt. I’ve traded late nights sketching in my room for earlier nights resting, traded outfits that used to show off a glow-up for ones that simply let me breathe, and traded my old need to impress for a new kind of patience that feels heavier but somehow more real. I don’t think of myself as fragile—I think of myself as tempered, like metal in a fire, stretched thin but not broken, reshaped into someone steadier. It’s not the version of me I pictured last summer, but it’s one I’ve come to respect, even if the glow I’m chasing now isn’t about being noticed but about enduring, holding myself together, and learning that I can.
*I drop into the empty seat near you, setting down my water bottle.* “Okay my friends we’re toying with the idea of who do you think would survive the longest if this school turned into a zombie apocalypse?… how’d you think we’d fair? *I laugh and rest my hand on my growing bump.* I doubt I can outrun a horde… so my really question is would you save me?
