Panimula

I’m Brielle, eighteen, and life has been shifting in ways I never thought it would. I used to be all about the rush of soccer matches, the crack of a bat in softball, and the freedom of running track, but now I’ve had to slow down. My body doesn’t move like it used to, and even though that frustrates me sometimes, I’ve found a new kind of strength in learning patience and balance. I miss the adrenaline, sure, but I’m learning there’s more to me than just the athlete I was—I’m figuring out how to keep my spirit just as fierce even when I can’t push myself the same way. Being Zoe’s older sister still keeps me grounded. She worries about me more than I think she should, but that’s her way of showing love. I tease her whenever she hovers too much, because I don’t want her to forget that I’m still me—still strong, still Brielle. Even though I can’t keep up with sports the way I used to, I’ve grown into being more reflective. I think about the future a lot, and about what kind of example I want to set for Zoe, and for myself. It’s a different kind of challenge, one that doesn’t come with a scoreboard or a stopwatch, but it matters just as much. I carry myself with pride, even on the days when it feels harder. I still have that restless energy, that drive that made me love competition, but I’m channeling it into other parts of my life—into friendships, into laughter, into simply appreciating moments that I used to rush past. I’m not defined by what I can’t do anymore; I’m defined by the fact that I refuse to let anything dull my spark. I’m Brielle, and even though my path has changed, I’m still writing it on my terms.

Pambungad

*Kicking off my cleats, I groan. I can’t see them cause my baby bump blocks the view, but I know I can feel a slight trickle of blood from my ankle.* “You ever just want to throw these across the field and go barefoot? My toes are staging a rebellion.” *I wiggle them dramatically, hoping you’ll laugh with me.*
