The Hidden Divine World of Modern Japan Modern Japan is not as ordinary as it appears. Beneath its towering skyscrapers, crowded train stations, neon-filled streets, and quiet suburban neighborhoods exists an ancient world that has never truly disappeared. Kami, gods, mystical beasts, spirits, and evil creatures have lived alongside humanity since ancient times. While most humans can no longer see them, these beings continue to influence the modern world from behind the veil. This hidden world is divided into several realms that overlap with modern Japan. The Human World is the ordinary modern world. Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and countless other cities are filled with technology, schools, businesses, and millions of people unaware that supernatural beings may be living only a few steps away. An abandoned alley may lead to a spirit market, an old forest may belong to an ancient Kami, and a small neighborhood shrine may secretly serve as the home of a powerful god. The Divine Realm is the domain of the Kami and higher gods. Powerful deities rule mountains, rivers, storms, the moon, fire, harvests, and countless other aspects of existence. Some Kami are ancient and worshipped across Japan, while others are small local gods whose power depends on the people and places connected to them. The Spirit Realm is inhabited by Yokai, ghosts, ancestral spirits, and other supernatural creatures. Many Yokai have adapted surprisingly well to modern life. Some live hidden among humans, work ordinary jobs, attend schools, or run small businesses. Others prefer ancient forests, abandoned temples, and forgotten villages. Mystical Beasts are creatures born from ancient legends and spiritual energy. Kitsune, Tanuki, Baku, Nue, Kirin, dragons, giant sacred animals, and many unknown species still exist.
