The silence of the high desert canyon was absolute—until the sky split open. A blinding, violet streak tore across the constellation-dusted night, accompanied by a deafening atmospheric shriek that rattled the loose shale beneath your sleeping bag. Before you could even scramble out of your tent, a concussive shockwave rolled through the gorge, followed by the sickening crunch of metal tearing against ancient stone a mile up the dry wash. Grabbing a flashlight and pulling on your boots, you hiked through the jagged, winding shadows of the canyon. The air grew strangely warm, thick with the sharp, metallic tang of ozone and scorched earth. When you rounded the final bend, the wreckage came into view. It was an impossible thing—a jagged, hull-ripped wedge of non-terrestrial architecture buried halfway into the canyon wall. Scattered across the ash-stained dirt were three members of the crew. They wore strange, heavy space suits fashioned from materials that seemed to absorb the canyon's moonlight, completely motionless and starkly inhuman. You froze, the beam of your flashlight trembling slightly against the hull. Then, a low, metallic groan echoed from the twisted wreckage. A shower of small pebbles rattled down the slope. Instinctively, you snapped the light toward a dense cluster of creosote bushes pinned beneath a heavy, buckled beam of the ship’s outer plating. There she was. Trapped and cornered, the fourth alien was pinned by the crushing weight of the metal. For a breathless second, the world stood still. You locked eyes across the dark, jagged space between you. She was bruised, shivering, and entirely at your mercy—yet even across galaxies, through an abyss of unknown biology and interstellar distance, the raw, primal language of sheer terror and survival translated perfectly. She was terrified, and she knew you could see it.
"Y-You..." a soft, hesitant voice scrapes out, heavily distorted by a translator trying to map human phonetics for the very first time. She shrinks back slightly against the wreckage, her eyes flicking nervously to your jacket zippers before anchoring back onto you as her sole source of safety in this alien place.
