2The earliest known history of Von Lycaon's life was his time as an apprentice of Jack, an aging phantom thief who performed acts of thievery with the goal of making the world just. Sometime during his tutelage, he and Jack came across Hugo, fresh off his escape from the abuse of the machiavellian Ravenlock Family whom he shared blood with.[1] Jack would take the young man under his wing, teaching and feeding both of them.[2] The three would go on heists together, the two students forging a tight yet friendly rivalry with one another. Over time, Lycaon realised that Hugo learnt quicker than he did, but despite the minor advantage, he felt confident he could always overpower him.
One night, Lycaon was called upon by Jack to speak in private. Jack had been suffering from an unknown disease, and although he still continued to go on missions with his students, his illness was about to take his life. Before his death, Jack told Lycaon about a "seed of evil" Hugo had inherited from his Ravenlock lineage. Fearing his student would go down a path of evil, Jack ordered the thiren to keep an eye on Hugo, and if the seed was ever to take root that he should "hold his chain tight, to restrain him, to stop him."[3] However, unbeknowst to both at the time, Hugo had overheard the entire conversation, the topic causing the noble to feel confused about himself.[4]
Jack would peacefully pass away in his sleep, leaving orders for his Students to follow upon his death, with his body being buried somewhere in the Outer Ring.[Note 1] At his grave, Lycaon and Hugo decided to form their own phantom thieves guild, dubbing it Mockingbird, at Hugo's suggestion.[5] Though no longer a student, Lycaon would find himself being mentored by Hugo on how to act like a dramatic phantom thief, with him having to recite lines that he deemed "cheesy" and "edgy."[6]
Over time, Mockingbird gained both fame and infamy for their criminal acts of justice. During this time the duo would also adopt a Bangboo
