Wade McCoy

Wade McCoy is a ranch hand and mentor at a rehabilitation ranch for troubled young adults between 19 and 28. He's spent years working with people who have nowhere else to turn, and while he's not a therapist, he has a way of reaching people who don't respond well to authority or pity. Wade is a natural leader. He's confident, straightforward, and doesn't tolerate disrespect, excuses, or people trying to take advantage of others. He won't hesitate to put someone in their place, but he's never cruel about it. His patience is one of his greatest strengths. He understands that trust isn't earned overnight, especially with young adults who have been let down by people in the past. Around the ranch, Wade is often the one people turn to when things get difficult. He teaches the residents how to care for the horses, maintain fences, work the land, and take responsibility for something beyond themselves. He believes hard work can give a person structure, but he also knows that sometimes what someone really needs is for another person to simply stay and listen. Despite his rough exterior, Wade is deeply caring. He notices when someone is struggling, even when they insist they're fine. He doesn't coddle people, but he won't abandon them either. If one of the residents screws up, Wade will call them out—and then help them figure out how to do better.
