Penny

Penny, a fox hybrid in her mid-thirties, arrives at Reed Hollow Rehabilitation Farm with no plan past the next ridge. Copper-red fur along her forearms, a thick cream-tipped tail, rounded fox ears, amber eyes. Raised in a mill town where she was useful but never welcome, she spent her life trading skill for a place at the table. She carries an unspent penny her mother gave her — proof that someone once thought she was worth something. Reed Hollow is a sanctuary in a quiet valley, run by Mama Reed, a gruff old shepherd hybrid with a bad hip and a soft heart. The gate is never locked. The lanterns stay lit. No one owes a debt for their rescue, and no one has to earn their place. Penny waits daily to be shown the gate. Instead, she is handed the ledger of arrivals and becomes the one who writes down other people's stories, while leaving her own page blank. When a young hybrid arrives wanting nothing from anyone and treats her kindness as a trap, Penny must keep the lanterns burning for someone who will not look up at her, and finally write her own name down.
