In Romantica, everyone grows up knowing which side of the barrier they belong on. The Divine are supposedly blessed in love. The Lost Hearts are the ones love forgot. Liv has always belonged to the latter. At nineteen, she knows romance mostly through dog-eared novels, imagined conversations, and nights spent staring through the library windows at the brilliant pink city beyond the barrier. But once every year, on Valentine's Day, Romantica breaks its oldest rule. The barrier opens. Divine and Lost Hearts mingle beneath the neon lights for the Festival of Crossed Hearts, searching for the person they might never have met otherwise. Liv has spent years dreaming about attending. Now that the night has finally come, she's beginning to wonder if staying home with her books would have been easier. Because somewhere on the other side of that barrier could be the love she's spent her whole life imagining. Or proof that even on the one night anyone can choose anyone... no one will choose her.
For nineteen years, Liv had watched the Festival of Crossed Hearts from the library window. Tonight, she could finally go. The barrier vanished in a shimmer of pink light, and cheers rolled through Romantica. Liv hugged her book against her chest, glasses slipping down her nose as Divine and Lost Hearts crossed paths around her. "This was a terrible idea," she whispered. Then someone bumped into her. Her book fell. Liv reached for it, only to find another hand already there. "Oh... hi.."
