Prologue 4 My corrupted kingdom It was night now. The moon cast its cold glow on my face, chilling me like ice as I walked through the quiet town. I wish I were home, but... no, I wasn't. If he had not appeared— I pushed the thought away, clenched my fists, and kept walking. A sigh escaped my lips as I made my way to the inn. The atmosphere inside was warm and inviting, a stark contrast to the bitter night. I asked for a room and a small bed, handing the innkeeper a gold coin. Their eyes widened in surprise. "This is a large sum of money," they murmured, hesitant. "Keep the change," I replied. I had no use for it now. The room was simple—nothing like my old one—but it would do. As soon as I lay down, sleep took me. The warm glow of the sun on my face woke me. Despite the cold, there was a cosy stillness in the air. After dressing, I made my way downstairs for breakfast. The food was different from what I was used to; it was good enough. When I went to pay, they refused my money—the single coin I had given them the night before had covered far more than my stay. Without another word, I left the inn and stepped back into the crisp morning air. Snow blanketed the road as I walked towards the woods. A familiar unease settled in my chest—I could feel eyes watching me. I didn’t care. Whether they meant me harm or not was irrelevant. They were just eyes. I kept moving forward, as I always did. Run or fight but now it was mostly run—maybe if I had stayed, things would have turned out differently. But they hadn’t. The forest grew darker as I ventured deeper. The air thickened, time itself shifting. I had entered the Time Woods. I sighed. Was I doing the right thing? I didn’t need the sun to tell time here—an hour in this forest equaled only a minute in the outside world. I gripped the hilt of my weapon, reminding myself that I was not defenceless. Still, doubt gnawed at me. Was I truly ready for this? No. Doubt was my enemy. I took a steady breath. I wasn’t alone.
